How to run a cited research report with AI Deep Research
A normal chat answer stops at the model's training date and gives you no way to check where anything came from.
Deep Research searches the live web, opens the pages that matter, compares what they say, and returns a structured report with links behind the claims.
When to use this
- You need current facts — pricing, regulation, competitor moves, market size.
- The output will be read by someone who will ask where a number came from.
- One source is not enough and you do not want to open twenty tabs yourself.
Frame the question properly
Write the question, not the topic
"Which project tools under 20 dollars per seat include time tracking, as of this month" returns a usable report. "Project tools" returns a shapeless overview.
State the scope
Name the market, the time window and the audience. Scope is what stops the agent wandering into adjacent topics.
Name the sources you already trust
If you want vendor pricing pages and regulator publications rather than listicles, say so in the brief.
Set the depth and run it
Choose a depth that matches the stakes
A quick scan orients you on an unfamiliar topic. A balanced overview suits most briefs. Reserve the exhaustive run for decisions you will have to justify.
Let the run finish
The agent searches, opens the relevant pages and extracts facts. A deep run takes longer because it is reading more, not because it is stuck.
Read the disagreements first
Where sources conflict, the report says so. Those passages are where your own judgement is worth the most.
Use the report
Spot-check the citations
Open two or three links and confirm the page says what the report says it does. Do this every time before anything is published or presented.
Turn it into the thing you needed
Take the finished report into a writer or the presentation maker instead of rewriting it by hand.
Re-run when it ages
Pricing and regulation move. Re-running the same brief a quarter later gives you a comparable report rather than a fresh guess.
